James Patrick Spalding, 77, went to be with his Lord at 11:31 am on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. James was born on March 21, 1940 in Lafayette, Indiana to Paul Spalding and Mary Spalding (Hurley). He married his wife Carolyn Cragun Spalding May 17, 1969 at St. Joan of Arc. She preceded James in death in December of 2000. Jim graduated with the class of 1958 at West Lafayette High School. Upon Jim's graduation, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1958 until 1962. He returned to West Lafayette as a Purdue firefighter; then he went on to become one of Chrysler’s Plant Protection Guards in Kokomo where he retired after more than 30 years of service. Jim was a member of the American Legion Post # 777 and a member of St Joan of Arc Church for more than 50 years. He loved cheering on the Boilermakers, spending time with family and friends as well as showing random acts of kindness to those he knew and even those he did not. He is already missed by his friends and family. Jim is survived by his son; Philipp Clinton Schelbert (Susan) of California, daughters; Paige Fulton (Mark) of Plainfield, Jamie Duncan (Brad) of Terre Haute, brother; Mike Spalding (Ann), grandchildren; Ashley LaBarge (Roy), Dylan Schelbert, Chance Duncan, Hunter Duncan, great-grandchildren; Daphne and Levi, and several nieces and nephews. Jim is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sister; Mary Marjorie Best A Funeral Mass for James will be held Monday, October 2, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church; 3155 South 200 West in Kokomo, with Father Matthew Arbuckle officiating. The family will offer visiting hours Sunday, October 1, 2017 from 3p.m. to 7p.m. at Ellers Mortuary Webster Chapel; 3400 South Webster Street in Kokomo. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery with Military Honors. Contributions may be directed to The American Cancer Society, The Salvation Army and We Care, or by bestowing a random act of kindness upon someone in his honor.
