Ruby Mae (Gentry) Hughes

Ruby M.(Gentry) Hughes grasped the hand of an angel and was taken to join her beloved husband of 55 years on January 23, 2015. She was born December 27,1917 in Montgomery County, Indiana to Eligah and Leora Wills) Gentry. She married Harold J. Hughes, March 21, 1943 in St. Petersburg, Florida. Mr Hughes passed October 27, 1998. Mrs. Hughes was also preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Mildred E.Stewart and a brother, Clarence W. Gentry.

Surviving are her children, Judy J. Bice, Lafayette, IN, Julie J. Russell, Palm Bay, FL., and Jerry J. Hughes (wife Connie) Crawfordsville, IN and a special niece, Joy Lynn O' Brien, Lafayette, IN. She was blessed with four grandsons, five granddaughters, fifteen great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews as well as several step grand and great grandchildren.

Mrs. Hughes was a 1936 graduate of West Lafayette High School and attended Purdue University School of Nursing. She was a lifetime member of Crawfordsville First United Methodist Church, a 50 year member of Athens Chapter #97 Order of the Eastern Star, Montgomery County Historical Society and Friends of the Library. She and her husband were honored as Outstanding Senior Citizens of Indiana by the late Governor Robert Orr. Mrs. Hughes was employed for 23 years as a Poor Relief Investigator for the Union Township Trustee.

Known as “Grandma” to many, she will be sadly missed by her closest friends, Mary Walters, Betty Armstrong, Mabel Johnson, and other special friends and acquaintances. Ruby was known for her wonderful home cooked meals and especially her baked goodies and candies. She made certain that family gatherings for birthdays and holidays were special occasions we would always remember. Her memory will live on in the hearts and minds of her children, who loved her dearly, as well as her family's and friends'.

Services are scheduled for 1:30 PM Wednesday, January 28th at Powers-Priebe Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Lewis officiating. Internment will follow at Oak Hill North Cemetery, Crawfordsville. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 12:30 PM until the service time.
