Paula (Alexander) Woods



Paula R. Alexander Woods, 74, of West Lafayette, died Sunday, January 30, 2011 at Indiana University Healthcare-Lafayette. Born May 14, 1936 in Greensburg, IN, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Vera Bickel Alexander.

She was a graduate of West Lafayette High School and received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Purdue University.

She was married to Ronald E. Woods on June 8, 1958 in West Lafayette who preceded her in death on June 27, 2007.

Mrs. Woods was an educator and historian. She was a teacher of English, Speech and Library at East Tipp High School in Tippecanoe County; Librarian for Cumberland Elementary in West Lafayette; Curator, Director of Education, and Associate Director for the Tippecanoe County Historical Association; and Public Relations Coordinator for the Greater Lafayette Convention and Visitors Bureau. She was the co-author of several local historical books. She appeared on a local television show for the Tippecanoe County Historical Association and also appeared on a show for the Greater Lafayette Convention And Visitor Bureau. Mrs. Woods also appeared on radio shows on WASK and appeared each month on WBAA.

She was awarded many honors including: Certificate of Recognition by West Lafayette Mayor for chairing the Centennial Celebration in 1988, Certificate and Sycamore Award from the Sycamore Girl Scout Council, 1993 Salute to Women Award in the Business and Professional Category, Certificate of Distinguished Citizenship from Mayors of Lafayette and West Lafayette in 1997; Certificate of Appreciation from the Tippecanoe County Board of commissioners in 1997, and Sagamore of the Wabash by Indiana Governor Evan Bayh in 1990. She was a former member of the Advisory Board for Purdue Education Alumni Association, Past President and member of Friends of Downtown, Past President and member of West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Board, Served on the Tippecanoe County Millennium Committee, Wabash River Parkway Commission, and Vision 2020 Committee.

She was a member of Federated Church of West Lafayette.

Surviving are her three children: Rebecca "Becky" Connolly (husband, Ed) of Spartanburg, SC, Tim Woods (wife, Darla) of Dallas, TX, and Bonnie Brose (husband, Geoff) of Albion, IN; and a sister, Jean Chew (husband, Bill) of West Lafayette. Also surviving are 7 grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. on Friday, February 4, 2011 at West Lafayette Federated Church with Rev. Gary Reif officiating. The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the West Lafayette School Corporation Education Fund, West Lafayette Parks and Recreation Foundation or Tippecanoe County Historical Association.
