Craig W. Davis, PhD, age 58, of West Lafayette, passed away at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at home. Born August 18, 1955, in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Ralph Davis, PhD, and Betty (Simpson) Davis. Craig graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1973. He earned his BS in Microbiology from Purdue University in 1977 and his PhD in Industrial & Physical Pharmacy from the College of Pharmacy at Purdue in 1981. He then joined Burroughs-Wellcome Company in Greenville, NC, where he worked for 14 years, from 1981 to 1995 in the department of Pharmaceutical Research & Development. He then went to Bausch & Lomb in Tampa, FL, where he was the Director of Pharmaceutical Product Development and the manager of Pharmaceutical Development from 1995 to 1997. Following that, he joined MDS Pharma Services in Tampa as co-founder and the Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development from 1997 to 2003. Dr. Davis returned with his family to West Lafayette in 2003 and joined The Chao Center for Industrial Pharmacy & Contract Manufacturing in the Purdue Research Park as Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer. He was an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Industrial & Physical Pharmacy in the College of Pharmacy at Purdue University. He was a former member of the PDA (Parental Drug Association), a charter member of AAPS (American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists), a member of Rho Chi National Pharmaceutical Honor Society, and a Fellow of the American Foundation for Pharmaceutical Education. Dr. Davis had authored various Pharmaceutical publications and book chapters and held a patent for the Method of Administering Respirable Pharmaceutical Particles. During his career in research and development, Dr. Davis was responsible for the development of drugs used in the treatment of AIDS, cancer, antiviral, opthalmics, and other life-threatening diseases.
Dr. Davis married Nancy Salla Davis, Dr. of Pharmacy, on November 19, 1983, in Greenville, NC, and she survives with their children, Katherine Elizabeth Davis of Waukegan, IL, and Eric William Davis at home and together they attended Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette. Also surviving is a brother, Mark Davis (wife, Mary Kay) of West Lafayette, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, and a host of friends and professional associates. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rae Tomastik.
Rosary service at 4:45 p.m., with visitation to follow from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Visitation from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Church of the Blessed Sacrament followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m., with Father David Buckles officiating. Graveside service at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Earl Park at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
