Karen Brown, 54
Karen Jo (Forsythe) Brown, 54, of Lafayette passed away, surrounded by her family and friends, on February 11, 2012 in Indianapolis at the IU-Methodist Hospital following a life-long illness.
Karen was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia. She was the daughter of Richard and Elsie (Inskeep) Forsythe who survive along with her husband Myron A. Brown. Karen had an older brother, Richard Brett Forsythe of Lafayette who preceded her in death. A sister, Valerie Ann (Forsythe) Mitchener and her husband Ted Mitchener of Anderson, Indiana also survive along with two nephews Scott and Ryan. Also surviving are two brothers. John Douglas Forsythe, of Commerce Township, Michigan and his wife Susan Pacheco and their two sons, Alex and Adam. The other brother, Roger Glen Forsythe, resides in Kingman, Arizona.
Karen started school in West Lafayette, graduating from West Lafayette High School and the Purdue School of Nursing. While attending Purdue she married Myron Brown on May 22, 1976. After graduation from Purdue, Karen was employed as a nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital until health reasons caused her to resign. She then began working for Clay Critters from her home until her health deteriorated to the point that she could not continue. In 1983, Karen became the mother of Erin Elizabeth Brown who survives along with two grandchildren, Lilly Jo Brown and Riley Elizabeth Dulin.
The family and the myriad friends of Karen Brown know the sketchy facts presented above tell you nothing about who she really was. Karen was a very gutsy individual who fought her health problems until the very end. Although her medical records filled several file cabinets, her sense of humor never wavered. Everyone who met her liked her and those who got to know her loved her, including her doctors and nurses. She kept track of her extended family and friends and their important events, reminding them when they forgot. She loved animals, especially her three cats who survive. She also loved music, photography, playing Scrabble, working puzzles, and trying to browbeat her brothers. She will be sorely missed by all who really knew her.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. till 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 14 at Hippensteel Funeral Home at 822 N. 9th Street (on the corner of North and Salem Streets) in Lafayette. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 15, at 11 a.m. in the Bethany Presbyterian Church, (3305 Longlois Drive in Lafayette) with Rev. Kevin A. Bowers presiding. Interment will be at the Tippecanoe Memory Garden immediately after the service. Following the interment, a luncheon will be served at the Church for those attending.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Bethany Presbyterian Church Child Care and Preschool Scholarship Fund (BCC&P). Their support was very helpful to Karen during the emergencies she encountered near the end of her life.
