Date of Death:
October 15, 2007
(From 1992) Don Paarlberg received a
BA in Philosophy
from DePauw and then served in the Peace Corps in Nepal.
(Don says he nearly went to jail as a draft resister, but failed the physical
on a fluke toe amputation from a college lawn mower accident.) Don then studied
at Northwestern. In 1974 Don joined the
Foreign Service and he finds diplomatic work immensely satisfying. His assignments
have included:
Political Officer at the American Embassy in Seoul, Korea; a State Department Liaison
Officer on Saipan; at the American Consulate General in Hong
Kong; and on the State Department’s Nepal desk in the Intelligence
Bureau; and at the Office for NATO Policy of the Department of Defense. This October
(ca.1992) Don went to the American Embassy in Panama where he will implement the Canal
Treaties in coordination with
US military authorities. Don learned Nepali in the Peace Corps, Korean and Mandarin Chinese at the
State Department, and is now studying Spanish full time. He met his wife,
Heeja, in Washington, DC
where she was
his Korean instructor. Don and Heeja are parents of
Michael, 12(1992) who is a fine violinist. Don enjoys doing “routine suburban
stuff” and “fooling around with philosophy”.
