Bob Woodruff and my memories related to him are one of the reasons why I created this blog. While I felt like I was far, far from being popular or being able to relate to the "in kids" in high school, I always knew that I was "better" than Bob (and this "fact" made me feel that I wasn't as "out of it" as I might otherwise have envisioned myself). I am ashamed that I was not mature enough to resist the bullying that he faced and more importantly that I never reached out to him.
ReplyDeleteNo one should have had to put up with being commonly known as "Toad" and treated as he was treated. Bob was both academically and socially well below average. He never hurt any of us and always was respectful of others. Many treated him with utter derision.
Bob - unfortunately - committed suicide while still a young adult. His death - brought on feelings of guilt within many of us and we should feel guilty. His life would not have been easy if we'd treated him with respect.
I hope that more of us will work to end bullying amongst our children, grandchildren and other children living amongst us.
